Any mountain bikers with a Twin?

I've been rocking the factory gear on bed rails with a Thule big jaw rack. My old Trance fits great in there.

I use this now:

Previously I had a Kuat rack that I bought in '12 for an F150(w/shell), then a '15 JKU.
It was 4 years old and I still got $350 for it, so I picked up this thing on sale for $25(plus they sent me another one for free) and it works great.
What pisses me off is I paid $160 for an Evoc 5-bike pad right before I got these, and while it works really well, 90% of the time I'm just hauling MY bike

Just put the Thule rack on my Leer camper shell. I have two Thule big mouth bike racks to go on the load bars.

I never went for roof racks, because of the hassle getting up there every time you put 'em on and take 'em off.
How are you gonna get up on top of your shell to do it?
How come you didn't just go with the hitch-mounted racks?

Don't you worry about about scratching your tailgate with the pad?

The Thule Big Jaw didn't work with the bike facing forward, due to the tonneau cover. But it fits facing backwards.

No, it has like a felt backside to it.
A lot of guys complain about the full pads dulling their paint finish after they leave 'em on for months at a time, but they're a minor PITA to put on so people tend to leave 'em in place.
These little ones come on and off lickity-split

I'm 7' 6", no big deal.

Seriously, it's not that bad. I've got a collapsible step stool that works great. I can also stand on the dropped tailgate and get to everything (that's a bit of a reach, though).

Regarding the hitch mounted carriers, I just don't like them...too wobbly. I like having the load bars for other things...kayak, luggage, dead grandma, etc.

Is there a way to lock that all down, I'm getting a full carbon fiber bike and am wondering about the best way to deter theft.

I run a long(er) cable because I also have a full gate pad that can hold up to 5 bikes.

@yokev you don't need a cable like that. Your 'squatch arms will scare everyone off!

I bought a new bike yesterday...nothing fancy since in the great scheme of things, I'm a total n00b, but I'm excited about it - Novara hardtail 27.5, SRAM X-7 components, tubeless. Happy to be on a new bike!

Jeez...when the heck you gonna ride it?
You take that thing out during the day and the fricken tires will melt off.
Although when it gets hot here(over 100 during the day) I ride at night. They make some pretty fuggin BRIGHT lights now days.
My main lite puts out an honest 1500 lumens. I 'spect you'll be looking at lights too, yes?
How hot is Sedona this time of year?

BTW...the cable is there for me to wrap it around the thief's neck, right before I throw 'em off the tail gate. Since it's 'bout a 7' drop to the ground, it'll snap the necks of every bike thief that isn't also an NBA player.

I bought two delta cycle locking fork mounts. Going to mount them under the lip of the bed using thread-serts so I can remove them if need be. Got a new fancy master lock that uses a quick up, down, left, right combo to lock the hub to the mount. Should have them installed this weekend.

Here's a pic from a road trip this summer, of my Canyon with two road bikes and a mountain bike in back. (27.5+ Cannondale Beast of the East hence the big rubber) I have a pipeline rack but I don't use it much--it's awkward with the topper on. I get a couple of bike boxes from my local shop and use them to pad between bikes and strap them all down. Easy peasy, and room for gear too.

Thought about going with a bed mount option, but I like having my bed available to haul camping gear when I go on biking/camping trips. Had a Thule doubletrack hitch mount rack but the sway in that thing plus having the arms clamp down on the bike frames made me feel VERY uneasy about carrying expensive bikes on it when driving on bumpy dirt roads to trail heads/camp sites. Recently picked up a yakima holdup 2 and it is much more stable.

I thought about getting racks like those. How much did they run you? I ride MTB occasionally but ride and race BMX more. I usually just throw it in the bed and be on my way haha.
