So has anybody tried to put the 4:10 gears from the 4cly truck into a V6? This topic has been briefly talked about, but I haven't heard of anybody actually doing it. Is it possible?
I have been considering this swap. My decision will likely depend on how many trucks end up in the scrap heap in the next year or two.
It could be an economical way to "gear down" and compensate for larger tires.
I have been researching this topic for 2 months since lifting my truck. I actually have all the OEM part numbers and was ready to pull the trigger yesterday but nobody could confirm 100% that the parts are compatible. OEM parts (4:10)would run about $1,040 for front and back and they are not returnable.... so today I just got off the phone with Randy's ring and pinion that has the online "diff wizard" which supposedly has every vehicles information for the past 35 years except for the new twins. After a 30 min discussion they offered me something i was pleased to here. A TRADE... So lucky me, I get to drop off my truck for 2 days, for their experts to pull it apart and find what actually it all is. So of course like they told me I'll be getting free stuff for my truck for it being the "guinea pig"
I'll post next week all information I received.

My only concern would be that once they open it up they find out it has some goofy seal or bearing or something that nobody stocks & they have to order it in tying up your truck for who knows how long.
I will tell you one thing I did and in my opinion is the best mod for the money and its the Trifecta Tune. Changed the shift points and of course gained more power.. really helped with my truck with being lift with 35in tires and 3:42 gears. The transmission doest hunting for gears all the time and they even recalibrated my speedo. All for $300 bucks.
That is a great deal! Hopefully you won't be out of commission long.
As someone looking to eventually gear swap, I appreciate the time you're putting into this.
LOL! Once a person gets to liking that "umph" it makes you crave more of it no matter what you're driving.
I guess that's why people race riding lawn mowers at something like a hundred miles an hour. We used to race fork lifts on the night shift at work and mine needed a little more of that "umph"
Anyone that does a swap will have to get a tune. I would think that the housings would be the same between trucks with 4 and 6 and the diesel. Gm keeps the same housing on the 1500s.
Easily checked with your GM dealer parts dept. Sounds logical. GM doesn't beef up parts that don't need it, not cost effective. Compare torque between the 2. The Diesel, well, that may be the one to use.
Well, I guess we'll all know for sure when 35CANYON gets his truck back. I sure hope everything works out. As far as a tune goes, I have a Dioblo Sport Intune left over from the car I traded in. Dioblo has a tune out for the twins now and it also allows you to change shift points and speedo recalibration. Has anyone else used anything other than the Trifecta tune?
Hey guys just a quick update, I drop my truck off on Wednesday the 16th at 8am. I will post all information that I receive from mechanics at Randy's ring and pinion. Whatever they tell me about the differentials I'll be sharing with the forum. I will also try to get pictures as they do the R&D on my Canyon.
Hey guys. So sorry for the delay. I will be giving a full write up on this topic at the end of the week.
I can tell you that "they" ( Randys Ring & Pinion) called me today and want me or bring the truck back on Wednesday so they can see if the new parts fit...
I'll be sharing all info so no worries. Also I'll be testing my truck all the way down to Arizona from Seattle for my 2 month Vacation So I'll keep everyone updated...
Yes I have the trifeta tune and it does increase the hp and torque. As for the gears I'll know tomorrow and will be able to share all the info I get IF I get NEW gears or not. But the tune is well worth the 300 bucks.
Starting to think 35Canyon has been abducted and we will get no further info from him - or he is stuck somewhere in the stormy weather on his Arizona trip.
I'm having someone look into this as well, I'm interested in the 3.73 but asked them to investigate the 4.10's also.
Might be a wait, but I'll post any feedback that I get as well.
Edit; my info seems to confirm that this is a Dana rear end which complicates things - if it was a standard GM 8.6, sounds like it would be a much more straightforward job.
