Mine did it once over the weekend. Thus far this engine is the nosiest on start up of any I've had, not counting this particular noise. I'm glad I have a lifetime powertrain warranty.

Mine has been doing it occasionally too. I'm at 450 miles.

Exclamation Update

Mine did it Sat. 3 times in a row, just minutes apart. Turned the air off & it didn't do it anymore. After some thought, I still think it's the AC clutch.

Maybe it is. Mine didn't do it for like a week and it did it twice in a row this afternoon.

I need to take it in to have a suspension/underbody squeak and the typical bose speaker vibration looked at. I'll mention it when I take it in.

That sounds like hydraulic lifters when cold... My truck does that every morning... Diesel here, but uses hydraulic lash adjusters

My 2017 V-6 has also developed an occassional rattling noise at 1800 miles at startup. Can be sitting overnight or sitting for a couple of hours. HVAC is in the floor mode so A/C compressor should not be engaged(?). From the driver seat, it sounds like it is coming from the right side of the motor but it could be deceiving. Does not do it enough to take it to the dealer to diagnose yet. Adding it to the list of other concerns such as the transmission stumble after first startup that has been slowly getting worse. It's my daily driver but it will be going in for a free oil change about the 4500 mile mark.

I agree that this is the noisiest vehicle (at startup) I have ever owned. Talked to some engineers here at work, poked around on the internet and it is completely normal for GDI. The pressure is extremely high and the injectors and high pressure pump are very noisy at startup. None of my previous vehicles were GDI and none of them were this noisy so I am convinced that this is just the way it is for this vehicle.

Still not a peep from mine. Sounds like a regular DI engine, like a sewing machine. But no abnormal rattles or anything.

Don't think so. The AC clutch shouldn't be engaged right at start up. Even with it on I bet the ECM delays it for at least a couple of seconds.

But of course this is also a guess :)

I had an Equinox 2.4 with D.I., and currently have a 2016 Equinox with 3.6D.I. and never heard this noise with either of those engines. One thing about something causing a noise that shouldn't be, it will eventually fail and reveal itself.

You're likely hearing rattling muffler bearings due to low headlight fluid. Pop the Fetzer Valve and top it off!

You sure he doesn't just need new bearings? I don't think you can turn the valve without a left handed screwdriver

I recently did my first oil change on the engine, but could not find a drain plug or check plug on the catalytic converter which is in the area of the noise. Could be low from the factory. I'll look again. Thanks for the pointers.

Noise at start-up

My 2016 has been making this noise at start up since it was new. I had the dealer check it at 5k and 10k oil changes and made sure it was documented I had concerns. It happens every time I start it. Dealer says there is nothing out of the ordinary...

Just to add to the discussion. We have a 2015 with 54K miles. This noise (and the audio on page one of the thread is perfect) didn't start until about 53K on ours. and yes it is LOUD and very disconcerting. Took it to dealer this week and of course they couldn't replicate it. Good dealership though so no issues there. Ours is intermittent but tends to be on cold start up. Just went out this AM to try and record and of course. No noise.

As it only rattles for 1 second I figured dealer would have trouble replicating or catching it. I first heard it when I was working on one of my bikes in the garage and the door was open. Wife started truck and I thought O-M-G. what was that????

Understand all the other posts on internal mechanicals and may be normal situation. But as a aircraft technician, private pilot and life time race car guy the noise FREAKS ME OUT. Appreciate all the info and will just continue to monitor.

I suspect it is not engine internal related. Piston slap and bad lifters tend to not come and go.

A/C compressors can be a cause as they can be on and off.starter drives can be intermittent.

Also many of these new models have a series of intake doors that when cold can make cars sound horrible. My 2.0 turbo would sound like it was going to blow up on cold start. Then when you would shut it off it sounded like a ball bearing rolling down a ramp into a bucket. It was all normal and intake related

So till this is found out don't over think this and let's just see if we can narro this down.

My 2017 has done it from day 1. Always on a cold start for a few seconds.
