Have you checked with your local DMV office? I know NC does temporary 30-day plates if you purchase a vehicle. If you show that you are still carrying insurance on the vehicle, they might issue a temporary plate that would carry you through until you move. It won't cost you anything to call and check. Of course, if you've already cancelled your insurance, you really don't want to drive on NC roads. When insurance is cancelled, DMV contacts the State Highway Patrol with your tag info. If you do drive without legal tags or insurance, make sure you don't drive near me!
