Recall #2027620 - Incorrect receiver hitch installed

Just got my OnStar Email for my late January 2016 Duramax Canyon..

Date: June 1, 2016

Program Title:

Incorrect Trailer Hitch

Program Description:

Certain 2015-2016 model year Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles, equipped with heavy-duty trailering package (RPO Z82), which includes a trailer hitch rated at 7,000 lb, may have been built with a 3,500 lb trailer hitch. If a 3,500 lb trailer hitch is used to tow more than 3,500 lb, cracks could develop at the hitch. Over time these cracks could potentially spread and fatigue the hitch. If the vehicle is being operated with a trailered load, a fatigued trailer hitch could allow the trailer to separate from the tow vehicle.

Safety Risk Description:

Over time these cracks could potentially spread and fatigue the hitch. If the vehicle is being operated with a trailered load, a fatigued trailer hitch could allow the trailer to separate from the tow vehicle.

Repair Description:

Inspect for the presence of a heavy-duty trailer hitch and, if necessary, install a new hitch.

Recall - wrong hitch installed

I went to the dealer today for an oil change and was surprised to learn I had a recall on my 2015. I had received no notice from the dealer or GM. Apparently, some trucks with the 7000lb towing package received hitches rated at only 3500lbs. Luckily, I tow a vintage Boler that tops out at 1800lbs fully loaded.
An inspection revealed I had the correct hitch.
If you paid for the towing package you may want to have this looked at.
Cheers

It would seem that GM is taking a closer look at what has been supplied and installed in the hitch department. I received a letter from GM on this matter yesterday. My case was my 4 cyl/manual truck (rated at 3500 lbs) being supplied with the 7000 lb hitch. It was not an official recall letter, it was a "be advised" letter. I knew the full ratings details when I made my purchase, so nothing new for me. I also only tow a small tear drop, nowhere near either rating. GM was only officially "cautioning" me not to exceed the trucks capability.

there is a tag on your hitch so you can see for yourself if you have the correct one installed for your truck. I have the V6 so a 7k tow limit the hitch on my truck is tagged for 8k pounds.

It's on the front on left side of the receiver. You should be able to see it just by lowering your head and looking on the hitch right behind the bumper.

Thanks, got the right one. This really worried me as we are picking up a new 5,200 lb travel trailer in Cincinnati OH on July 5th. Will see how the Duramax does pulling trailer back home to Northern MN.

Ok 08Canyon. Thanks. Great thread here. I went and checked the label on my RWD diesel. I was relieved to find I have the correct hitch. I did find what looks to be a mistake on the label that impact posted above. It looks like the tongue weight and total weight are switched around. The metric weight is also blanked out with Xs. Look at my label and compare.

Just A FYI everyone should still see their dealer to verify. The recall has to be cleared in the database. For all we know the sticker could be incorrect.

The stickers are confusing. 404, yours makes sense to me, showing 7,700 lbs max. load on the trailer and tongue (I also see you have a 2016 model). Impact's sticker is like mine. Seems the 2015 sticker was printed wrong.

Yeah. I'm waiting to see him haul a trailer with a 7500 lb tongue load. An empty trailer from a big rig should do nicely.

Latest recall -- Trailer hitch (wrong hitch installed)

Feel free to delete -- already a thread and I missed it.

Just checked on the GMC site and this is the first recall I have seen for my VIN. I think mine is fine (checked hitch label from other thread) but wanted to put it out there. The recall was posted 6/1/16.
