cold start

Well temps finally dropped to about 40 the other morning and lets just say wow, this thing can make some funny noises on a colder start. You could literally hear the motor surging back and forth(I guess some form of high idle?) Guessing you guys are seeing the same?

My truck has experienced temps as low as -8°F and doesn't exhibit funny noises.

Had that once, and idle fluctuation between about 1k and 8k rpm turned my defroster (AC) off and it went away. Never reoccurred though.

We had temps -12 a few weeks ago with a solid week of zero or below. The dmax started right up, no plugging in, idled fine with no hesitation in starting and no funny idle noises or rpm flux.

-23*C and truck fires instantly and has no abnormal loud noises from engine.
For a diesel it is still very quiet when cold, a little louder but nothing abnormal.

Note: My block heater cord is still wrapped up under the master cylinder from factory. .

I've started my diesel in temps as low as 10 F and never had any weird noises or surging. Did this happen once or multiple times?

I can hear the RPMs rising and dropping periodically when warming up, but I don't think it's to the extent of what you are describing.

-20F cold start plugged in and -10F cold start not plugged in (also have started with wind chills below -30F) and haven't had any crazy idles or noises. Bit of a stronger "tick" at the colder temps but nothing alarming.

Only thing I have noticed is on these real cold starts, after a couple short trips (say 4-5), that I believe the truck has a slight sweet smell to it. I looked for coolant in oil and around the truck but all seems well.

Haven't had anybody else confirm the smell so may just be going crazy on night shift.

Video I created: this is a -15F start no plug in. I have the heater but wanted to know if it could start.
