Air Filters

I know that this is for the Colorado fans and I do own one however, My wife drives a 2011 Equinox and I changed the air filter and noticed that the original and the replacement
filters have this strip of brown glue like stuff that runs perpendicular to the top edges of the filter. What is the logic in that? I replaced it with a WIX and it even had this
strip of glue like stuff but it is white. So, I'm wondering why the strip of glue running across the filter?

Thanks.

I would venture a guess that it may be to stiffen the filter material so that it doesn't cave in from air flow. But it's just a guess.

Probably holds the pleats open so the air flows through rather than letting pleats collapse.
