Yes. Make sure you get a bypass on the cooler to help the fluid warm up to operating temps faster. So far I have noticed a 20-25 degree drop in ATF temps in stop and go traffic. And it is not even the dead of summer yet. Outside temps have been in the 90s already and without the cooler the tranny temps were rising over 200F!!!!

Re: 4L60-E Mod/Upgrade Info (with Pics)

most def. guys. it's on my upgrade list asap. bad thing and good thing is that i'm stationed in germany, so there will not be any 90 degree temps....maybe 80 at the highest. and bad thing, warming up is going to be a bitch on the transmission if it's not done.......wonder which is a the most harmful? high temps of summer or improper warming up in winter?

Re: 4L60-E Mod/Upgrade Info (with Pics)

It will by-pass fluid at start-up and in the winter so you should see very little difference between having a cooler and not till fluid gets warm enough. If stop and go traffic is bad enough, you could still break 200F in 80F weather. I did anyway.

Re: 4L60-E Mod/Upgrade Info (with Pics)

If anyone's interested, for those in colder climates it might be a good idea to install a thermostat to bypass the cooler until operating temp is reached.

Re: 4L60-E Mod/Upgrade Info (with Pics)

Or buy a cooler with a bypass integral to the unit although they might be limited in size based on manufacturer. External thermostat has more cost involved and more potential for leaks with all the extra clamps and fittings but you are also more assured that temp will not drop any till the fluid is warmer and starts moving thru the cooler.

Re: 4L60-E Mod/Upgrade Info (with Pics)

I had kicked around the idea of using the thermostat and then discovered the cooler with a bypass built in. Unless you live in the deep South, it's good to have one or the other.
BTW: Nice looking install, Todd. :D

Re: 4L60-E Mod/Upgrade Info (with Pics)

Hey sarge, do you know what kind of fittings are on the cooler lines at the tranny? I'm planning a remote cooler install and need to have the hoses made up. I'm looking at going with the AN fittings at the cooler for a cleaner install. I'd like to stay away from barbs and clamps -- just my hangup. Thanks for the help.

Yep. And the reason I chose it over the others is because it has the internal bypass feature.

Install the cooler first, then the servos.

Since I already have the vette servo, anything I should be on the lookout for when I get around to the cooler?
