Hey guys, Ive been searching for weeks but cant find a lick of information besides guys who cant figure out that plastic bedrails can be cut for their existing stake pocket holes. I have an '04 that doesnt have the stake pocket holes... And I need them to add a rack. So my issue of course is: how should I go about doing it? Does anyone know of a template? ARe the stake pockets just punched out or are they punched and bent inwards to add heft? Could I just take an angle grinder and do it myself or must the edges be welded? Can someone post pics?
The fact that your searching is in vain should be a clue that this is not a modification that has been addressed before.
What you need to do to install bed rail pockets will depend largely on what you want the end result to be. Stake pockets in a pickup bed are not just holes cut in the rail tops. The pockets have sides and bottoms to support the "stakes". I haven't heard of anyone attempting to add stake pockets to a 1st Generation Colorado/Canyon. I'm pretty sure that there are sources available for racks that bolt to the top of the bed rails, instead of requiring pockets.
With that said, you could get the angle grinder out and slice some holes where you want them, throw a rack on the truck and move on.
