JL Stealth box for extended cab sucks

Don't buy it. It is a hack job that looks like sheot. It leaves an ugly 2" gap behind it, and is not as tall as the cup holder. The pic in their catalog is sneaky and makes it look like it fits. And they charge $130 to restock it! Oh yeh, the black tool box things get stuck a little under the sub, you rip the carpet off the box and bend the boxes when you flip them over.

I'm not so much whining as warning the rest of yall what your ~$600 gets you. Luckily I got had bought it thru a friend's shop and I didn't loose money.

Build a custom one, or have a shop do it. There are tons of cool designs on this site.

His is a custom box with a JL speaker, not a JL Stealth box.

What about the MTX Thunderform sub with amp. Does that look/fit OK and of course, most important, sound OK? Here's a link from Crutchfield's site but I believe one of our forum sponsors has it for under $400 with the built in amp.

WTF? Why doesn't it sit flush against the wall?
For $600 I would be pissed too.

this is a high quality product and it looks like you didnt install it right. it will fit flush if you follow the directions, just look on jl's website. i just looked and it seems you have to tighten a bracket to the back of the box in place of the jack. you may have not tightened it enough. i mean maybe you did this but jl makes great products and i wouldnt get to worried yet. take it to a professional and see what they say

The pic on their website shows a little gap between the sub and back wall but not as much as shown in your pic. You can see that theirs sits towards the back of the seat belt buckle where yours sits toward the front of the seat belt buckle.

Thanks for suggestions.

I did have it installed professionally; the shop spent an extra hour trying to make it fit right. They called JL, who said this is the way it is.
The catalog pic is sneaky. The gap is hidden by the upper cushion.

But look where the seat belt buckle is, the gap is not nearly as large as yours.

And look at the front edge of the box -- yours is ahead of the leading edge of the seat, and theirs is at least 1/2" further back.

But... how does it sound?

Ok so I had fixed the JL box and am now posting pics. We had to cut up the brackets and tilt the box back 10deg or so, and then mount a riser underneath the cup holder. It isn't very pretty, but not noticeable and far better than the 2" gap behind the box. We also shifted the black storage compartments a bit.

That looks better. What are you using to power it? Any other audio mods?

I have an ExCab also, and have been on the fence about audio mods. But this might be a solution, since I use the ExCab area alot. The other options I'm considering is an under-seat unit, or a custom made box that fills the ExCab area but allows the seats to fully recline.

Thanks, it was inexpensive, and took only about 2.5 hrs to install. Sounds alot better. Thinking about moving it to the wifes car ,and putting a basslink 2 in so I can power the components off the expansion amp.
