Default Rear axle end play/popping/knocking/noise from inside cab

2005 Canyon/2WD/Offroad/26k miles

I can hear knocking coming from the rear-end axle from INSIDE the cab.

It is quite loud.

It occurs while:

Pulling in and out of the drive way.
Driving slow down a dirt road.
'Rocking' the truck while driving 20mph or so on pavement from moving the steering wheel back and forth.

While rear end is jacked up off the ground, the axles have an end-to-end play but not alot. But they do make the same contact noise which is from the brake drum area.

Does anyone else have the same issues?

possible bed mounting bolts. There has been mention of similar noises relating to this. Try search on bed mounts. Welcome aboard!

Is it a high pitched pinging noise? Or like a hammer hitting metal?

It is a brake drum noise. Like the drums are hitting the backing plate. If this was the case, it would rub while driving I would think. There is a bulletine out on the rear brake drums rubbing - #1556523.

I will try to paste it in here tomorrow.

Seems mine would be rubbing not banging like a hammer.

When rear wheels are jacked off the ground, you can push/pull the wheels in and out and make the same exact noise it makes when in a driving situation.

It's not so much the amount of end to end axle play as it is something contacting the drums.

Did you find out where the noise was coming from? I have the same problem. I love the truck but it is annoying.

Just another "normal" problem with these trucks. "Normal"..

Except we didnt complain with our s10s and 1500s did we?

It has more slack than it should and bottoms out hard and loud. The c-clips shoulde been 1/32-1/16" thicker. I just put on steels with GTs and its so loud when you rock it and you occasionally feel it when driving.
