Park Brake Release Broken

The other day, we had freezing cold weather and my parking brake wouldnt release completely. Instead of pulling the pedal up, I pulled with excess force, and broke the plastic release handle on the dash. Now that it has warmed up, the brake still works, but I have to pinch and pull whats left of the handle with two fingers to release it. Do I have to replace the entire parking brake assembly (cable and all), if I want to replace the dash handle?

i have not looked to be sure, but you should be able to replace just the handle. the cable goes into the handle.

Ok..maybe I'll check with the parts dept. I'd hate to have to replace the whole setup.

Re: Park Brake Release Broken

When my 05 assembly got replaced the did the whole rear section first up to the part under the drivers door where it goes from the single cable to the two rear cables. They next had to replace the whole front assembly. I hope you can get just a handle but if not be sure to get the updated design on the parking brake handle.

Re: Park Brake Release Broken

How much did the front assembly cost you? I need to replace mine or adjust it if that's possible. I have to pull the handle and reach under the truck and pull on the cables to release them.

Re: Park Brake Release Broken

Mine was sticking like medical_emt's but was under warranty. I was told there was an updated design. I have no idea on the cost.

Re: Park Brake Release Broken

Try to find another handle at a salvage yard or check your stealership's parts department or pm Squire (he works in a GM parts department).
The handle comes off by squeezing the tabs so if you can get one it's easy to replace. I've heard that the updated park brake apply/release assembly costs about $100.

Re: Park Brake Release Broken

my 07 parking break release looks like it was designed to fail. 1st time i test drove the truck i jumped in and pulled the release. "snap!" i was like reallly!

sometimes i wonder why they would not take the time to improve simple things like this

---DDM 10k HIDs, K&N 63series, Flowmaster, Custom Tune, E-fan, Reflexxion Cobra hood---
---07' Z85 4x2 CST lift---
--------32x10.5 Nitto Terra Grapplers on Ultra Mako Black 16x8s, MaxAir shocks, 1" BL--------

Ok, thaks for the info. At least now I know that I can replace the handle w/o replacing the cable.
I think I'll try the salvage yard first. If not, I'll pm the member who you said works in the GM parts dept.

When you say the "apply/release assembly", I assume that it's not just the handle. I hope not for $100! What's the benefit of the update?
