P0017 scary thought and questions

Howdy everyohe. So, I was driving to work on Friday morning, and the truck started fine. Left my house, and the truck sounded a little funny. Got half way to work (3 miles), and go to a stop sign, and the truck went BLAH!!! Rough idle (300 rpms). Made it to work and the truck stalled, without a check engine light. Restarted the truck at work, got the check engine light, and made it stall again. With my friends code reader, i got a P0017 code. I already knew what that was, so I called the dealer. Under warranty, so I had it flatbedded to the dealer. At the end of the day, I was told what the problem was, and the part was not in stock. So, Monday is here, and my truck is fixed. They replaced the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve, and changed the oil, since one of my 3 screens was missing. The screen was found, in tact, according to the service manager, and I was told I was lucky they found the screen. He then gave me a 3 page printout of the "preliminary inspection document" # PIP3694C (document 2235070). This can be a very bad situation. If the crankshaft end play is out of spec, they recommend a engine replacement!! OUCH!!!!

SO, HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND QUESTIONS:
1- my truck is a 2006 colorado crew cab, 3.5l with 19,000 miles on it. Since 1500 miles, it has used Mobil 1 Synthetic, and changed at least 2 times a year. I also use a oil filter magnet on my truck, and all vehicles since i have started driving since 1989. Is there any cause for concern with either of my choices here?
2- should i be concerned since the truck is so young in miles, that this could happen again?
3- dealer did a regular oil change, and i came home and re-did the oil change with mobil 1 again.
4- how many others have had this problem ( i know there are topics on this already), but has anyone had to have the motor replaced?

All help is greatly appreciated ! thanks.

Mobil 1 after 1500 miles. It was a typo and I corrected it.

Re: P0017 scary thought and questions

Crankshaft end play or camshaft end play?
The camshaft position actuator solenoid has been redesigned to eliminate the screens from coming loose. The dealer should have installed the new design because if they tried to order the old part number, the GM parts system would give them the new number. Any solenoid can fail but because of the new design, it would fail without pieces of the screen going through the system.
The magnet may work if the screens are magnetic but even without a magnet the screens would get trapped in the filter media.

Your questions are certainly valid, but I think you can rest easy.

Most likely the camshaft position sensor ot the actuator solenoid.

Re: P0017 scary thought and questions

My 2006 gmc canyon with 18,000 miles started running rough and engine light came on. I took it to auto zone and they pulled a p0017 code. I took it to the Gmc dealer. They called me today and told me my engine was inoperable and the engine essembly had to be replace because the internal bearings were bad. I am 7mnths out of the 3yr warranty but they contacted Gm and they are replacing it with a brand new engine, parts and labor free. Has anyone else had this problem?? It just seems to odd for only 18,000 miles!?

Re: P0017 scary thought and questions

They said that the GM district manager sent them an email back informing them I had to pay 50%.. I did call 1800gmcares and they opened a investigation/claim looking into it. I should hear from GM tomorrow. The Gm tech that is working on my truck is saying Gm should replace the engine because it is a defect/shouldn't happen at 18,000 miles and there is nothing I could have done to cause it. The endplay is beyond Gm specs so the only fix is a new engine assembly. I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone might have :) Who should I call next if I get bad news from Gmcares tomorrow? Is there a different avenue I should seek? Thanks

You could tell the service manager to reach down between his legs and summon some testicular fortitude and go to bat for you. A good service manager would get a hold of the district manager and change his mind for you so you don't have to pay out of pocket.

Re: P0017 scary thought and questions

I heard from the shop yesterday. They said the AVN(area vehichle manager ) still says I have to pay 50% of the cost. Then Gm customer service called me soon after . They said the case was closed and thats all that they can do is 50%.. No one I talk to can understand how GM is just fine and dandy with a whole engine having to be replaced at 18,000 miles and raping the customer. I just dont get it.

Re: P0017 scary thought and questions

i would call the better business bureau and your state attorney general and let them in on the situation a motor with 18,000 miles should not have faulty bearings unless you were running some REALLY heavy weight oil, the only argument i can see on their part is it wasn't broken in properly
