Default Brake Lights don't work but the third light does?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone might have some ideas since I'm running into some weird issues.

I have a 2007 Colorado and I just noticed all of my brake lights were out the other day. So I started with the third light (on the cab) and replaced the bulbs, which fixed the problem for them.

I then went to do the same with the 2 back brake lights and realized that they were working perfectly fine when doing things such as locking and unlocking the doors. So they were flashing no problem.

So my problem is that the 2 brake lights don't work.

Here is what I've done and how I got here:

1. Checked the fuse under the hood, it was OK but I still replaced it anyhow.
2. The third light works fine when touching the brake after replacing the bulbs
3. Checked to make sure the brake lights actually work and they do no problem

So my only thing left is that it must be something to do wiring? I would assume that if the third light is working then the brake switch isn't the problem.

So I'm left with these ideas that I'm going to check tomorrow:

1. Is it a grounding issue?
2. Or faulty wiring?

Is there anything else anybody might suggest to look for?

Thanks so much!

Derek

When you say your "brake lights work", does that mean on the brighter filament, or the running light filament?

They're dual filament bulbs, so your running lights could be fine and the brake light filament (which is brighter) could be broken.

Also, and this sounds like it's more likely the case, there's a recall on the brake switch. Sometimes it takes out all 3 brake lights, and sometimes the 3rd brake light still works and only the two in the taillights don't work, there doesn't really seem to be a rhyme or reason to it. But I'd start by checking the filaments in the bulbs (take your turn signal bulbs and put them in the brake sockets and vice versa, see if you still have issues). If the bulbs are fine, take it to the dealer and have them replace the brake switch. There's a recall on it, so it shouldn't matter how many miles you have, and it only takes about 5 minutes, if they've got a new switch in stock.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I agree on the brake switch the problem though is that I'm in Canada and there is no recall for them on my specific truck. It does make me skeptical after reading how many US trucks were affected but it's a battle I've already lost with the dealers here in town.

I will try your suggestion on looking at the filament. Thanks!

Well, the good news is, if it isn't the bulbs, the switch is pretty cheap and very easy to replace yourself. I think it's about $8 or something like that, if I remember right,

I had the exact same situation, and yes, the running filaments were on, but not the brake filaments.

Replaced the bulbs, and that was it.

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. I tried what naskie suggested this morning and as royrjs mentioned, it was the filaments. Learn something new everyday.

Thanks a lot, greatly appreciated.

It happened to me the week after i got my truck...... i was scared as sh*t cause i didn't want to be spending any extra buck on a decent, well maintained, carfax-recorded serviced truck

After a couple of bucks were spent, i got my nerves under control one more time, haha

Sorry to jump in so late on this but I have this problem right now. Third light works but both corner brake lights are out. Probably the switch? Recall on the '06 too?

Thanks.
