Changing the Compass Zone

I was sitting in my truck looking at the compass and noticed that it indicated the wrong direction. I was facing due east and it's readout indicated norteast. The owner's manual does not give any diagrams of the mirror and also the description of the mirror is different than the actual production mirror. You use the map light buttons to change these settings. Pressing and holding the left button for about 5 secs. and you will see the word zone light up next to the direction. Then press the right button to change the zone. Once you find out what buttons to push the owners manual make some sense. Pressing and holding the right button change the temp display from far. to cel. and off.

The map lights are integrated into the rear view mirror as well.

To those wondering the compass is only included in the DF8 Upgraded mirror.
The DF8 mirror is NOT available with the UE1 On Star option.

Question....................?

I have a plan mirror with the map lights. Could I order a DF8 Upgraded mirror to peplace my current mirror?

If so I wonder if it would be a major operation?

I couldn't order the upgraded mirror (electrochromic with compass) without getting OnStar. It must be different in Canada. Therefore I ordered OnStar and got it. (I hate when GM does that.)

That's wrong. I was able to get the fully upgraded mirror and NO On Star for me.

zarrell,

What I was saying is that You CAN'T Get The DF8 mirror AND On Star.

The On Star is integrated into the mirror.
I don't know what features the On Star Control head Mirror has however.

Hkick,
I'm not sure if there is any change in the wiring or not. I would think you would be able to order that DF8 Mirror through parts.

Goto http://www.GMpartsdirect.com or http://www.chevroletaccessories.com see if it's there. If not email them or call them.

Let us know what you find out.

Owners Manual Page 2-39

Compass Operation
The mirror has an eight-point compass display in the upper right corner of the mirror face. When on, the compass automatically calibrates as the vehicle is driven.

When the ignition and the compass feature are on, the compass will show two character boxes for approximately two seconds. After two seconds, the mirror will display the current compass heading. For example, NE is displayed for north-east.

Compass Calibration
If after two seconds the display does not show a compass heading, there may be a strong magnetic field interfering with the compass. Such interference may be caused by a magnetic antenna mount, note pad holder or similar object. If the letter C appears in the compass window, the compass needs calibration.

The mirror compass can be calibrated by driving the vehicle in circles at 5 mph (8 km/h) or less until the display reads a direction.

The compass can be placed in calibration mode by pressing and holding the on/off button until a C appears on the compass display.

Owners Manual Page 2-40

Compass Variance

Compass variance is the difference between earth’s magnetic north and true geographic north. If the mirror is not adjusted for compass variance, your compass could give false readings.

The mirror is set in zone eight upon leaving the factory. It will be necessary to adjust the compass to compensate for compass variance if you live outside zone eight. Under certain circumstances, such as a long distance, cross-country trip, it will be necessary to adjust the compass variance.

To adjust for compass variance, do the following:

1. Find your current location and variance zone number on the zone map that follows.
2. Press and hold the on/off button until a zone number appears on the display.
3. Once the zone number appears on the display, press the on/off button quickly until you reach the correct zone number. Stop pressing the button and the mirror will return to normal operation.
If C appears in the compass window, the compass may need calibration. See “Compass Calibrationâ€

I pulled up the online manual in a pdf file. Then copied it and saved it to the web gallery. I then copied the text from the manual. So I didn't type anything, just copied, pasted and reformatted it.

If you want the online manual. Go to http://www.mygmlink.com add your vehicle. then look in the glovebox section.

I recommend this site. It is very useful!
