Fuel Gauge Not working while in Drive

I have an '05, Z71 2wd, I-5, 4L60E. The fuel gauge does not work in Drive, but it works fine in N or Park. This is not a problem around town, but on a long trip, we have run out once. Has anyone got an idea for a remedy to this? What switch is not working in D that would prevent the fuel gauge from working?
I'm starting to lose back lighting on the AC and radio now that it is 11 years old. I can't complain much. It is under-powered for the interstate, but is fine for around town.

Can you clarify this a bit. Are you saying that the fuel gauge works when the truck is sitting still, but not while moving? Or is it that the gauge will not work any time the transmission is in "Drive", whether the truck is stopped or moving.

The signal for the fuel gauge goes from the PCM, to the BCM, and to the IPC, using the Serial Data Bus. If there was a problem with that, it would most likely affect other gauges/indicators in the IPC.

Maybe a bad sending unit.
