Unhappy 2007 with P0300 code

2007 Colorado 5cyl with 70,000 miles. Dealer said bring it in for 90.00 diagnostic and could cost up to 5000.00 for head.
Don't really want to but thinking about trading in.
Ideas/suggestions please??????

if the truck runs good, you should have time to research. search for p0300 here and on 355nation.net. I think from memory that a compression test is best way to confirm/eliminate a head/valve issue. i'd find an reputable independent shop to do it (or DIY), I don't trust the dealer at all. there are many other reasons for that code ... actuator solenoid, loose bolts on the intake manifold, faulty coil(s), loose/intermittent connector, plugs, etc... P0300- what's my next step - Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon Forum

Isn't that a random misfire code? If so have you ever put spark plugs in the truck? 70k they will be worn out for sure. I think plugs would be a good cheap start you know? Besides if they have never been replaced it needs it anyway......

And look very closely at the boots too.

Again, have you done spark plugs yet? If not do that first, It could be #5 plug. (much cheaper than a coil)

If you haven't changed the plugs at 70k they are overdue anyway.

Took to mechanic and he could not get it to miss...once it throws the P0305 code if it is not still missing he says
no way to diagnose. It misses when it throws the code and the misses again when Check Engine Light goes out.
It is out now so mech says no way to check.

Swap the #5 coil with one of the others and see if the code moves with the coil.
