Onstar

They are watching our every move. How long before they use this tech against us? Maybe for denying warranty claims or handing out speeding tickets? Thoughts?

Is there a way to disable onstar?

Well, what you are showing is Onstar Smart Driver, a service you have to sign-up for and enable. According to Onstar, this data is collected (with your permission) and is evaluated and sent to various Insurance Companies to determine if you qualify for discounted rates. Not to say it can't be used for other purposes, or if it's even being gathered without our knowledge, but if you can display it within the Onstar website, then you or someone else who has access to your account signed up and agreed to the monitoring. You can opt out at anytime through the same website. Again, who knows if it's still being gathered, but I'm sure there are privacy rights that Onstar would be violating if the data was shared without the owner's permission.

If you want to cancel, just go under Settings at the top of the screen, and click cancel enrollment. It also shows the date you enrolled, so if you didn't enable it, at least you'll know when someone else did!

It would not be sufficient evidence to support a speeding ticket.

LOL! I didn't see the one last night, but it does seem odd complaining about a voluntary program you would have had to sign up for and agree too...

Out of curiosity I logged in and checked and I was automatically enrolled as well when I purchased my truck. I opted out and cancelled it but definitely a little scary. Thanks for the heads up.

So strange.. Onstar is reporting a 60 MPH wheel speed, yet the GPS info shows the truck to be pretty much stationary?

No, it is a new one because the other one disappeared. I thought I might have not hit the "post" button or something. Why would an admin delete it? I don't get it.........

One of the moderators got into a disagreement discussion with another member in that thread and for whatever reason deleted it. For that, I apologize from the staff because it should not have been.

Thanks for keeping us informed. I was curious because I was following the thread and one minute it was there and the next minute it wasn't.

@Blue15ColoradoLT Should not be apologizing for me. Thanks anyhow. I apologize for deleted that thread. It was my fault. I never deleted a thread before, but I got in a disagreement with a member and lost my temper. I take full responsibility for that.

Yes, log in or call Onstar to disable it. Why did you sign up for it in the first place if you're bothered by them tracking it?

It seems some people were signed up when they purchased their truck, apparently without their knowledge. I remember my salesman doing the initial setup with Onstar, but he did not enable the Smart Driver section. Seems others were more than helpful with their setup!

All modern vehicles have some level of a black box capability onboard. If you are involved in an accident and someone tries to sue the manufacturer, they are going to access that data to attempt to defend themselves.

Right now, I assume, though I could be very wrong, typical lawsuits between two people probably doesn't justify accessing the black box. But one day that will become commonplace I bet as well for accident reconstruction. Any case that involves a lot of injury, death, mayhem ($$$), the manufacturer is going to be drug into the lawsuit.

Just like any case of forensic evidence you see today with DNA evidence, cell phone dumps, etc., all of this will be commonplace soon. Short of cutting the cord, disconnecting from the world and returning to horse & buggy, plan on it.

Read this story from Trump.
