Exhaust Particulate Matter Sensor Fail

26,500 Miles now, CEL comes on so I swing by my dealer. Exhaust Particulate Matter Sensor is "bad". New sensor is supposed to arrive Tuesday, appointment on Wednesday. It is noisier than normal, so I have it parked and am driving the Passat. Will post results.
I am not afraid of the engine or transmission, but my ECM, BCM, and now this sensor failure is why I wish GM kept the 100,000 mile warranty on the Duramax line.

Can you post the part number for this when you get the info and comment if you notice a change between regen intervals, if you track them?

Reason I ask is because I'm wondering if this is the cause of more frequent regens due to poor calibration and I might like to try swapping mine and see what difference it makes if any. :grin2:

Will do. Most of my trips are 75 miles each way or longer at highway speeds, so I have never noticed a regen.

Are you completely stock too seeing the crappy +/- 200 regens? I'm really hating that GM says they should be happening once per tank or tank and a half and I'm averaging 2 per tank :serious:

I'm inclined to think this sensor is outta wack and needs to be replaced, it's not getting cleaned properly during regens or for some reason the EGR is overactive and creating excess soot.

Mine is completely stocked! LA traffic has a lot of stop and go, I would say 50-50 split between highway and city. Though, driving a long stretch of highway, the regen interval is around 350 to 400 miles. I don't even know how to ask the dealer service to check on the sensor. They probably don't even know where to begin and may claim nothing is wrong. May be just wait for the part number from KS_Jetta, I'll buy one and replace it myself. Any suggestions?

I would think tech could check sensor function using the GM scan tool.

The "regen once per tank "is such a generic term that all brands are using for reference to regen intervals. My 6.6L had a 136 liter tank, regen was every 450 kms( i rarely drive in a city by the way), about 3/4 of a tank. My Cummins regen was every 300 kms or every 1/2 tank same driving habits and 130L tank. My 2.8L regen is every 650-700kms , 3/4 of a tank, tank size 80L. So you can see that referring to regen as once per tank by all brands is never accurate or a good reference point.

In the city with stop and go traffic and idle time will definitely affect regen cycle. If you work the truck hard, pull trailer, drive up steep grades, do lots of highway driving you will get the best milage between regens. This is due to the truck performing p
Passive regens due to the heat in DPF cleaning without having the 5th injector dose fuel(Active regen)to provide the heat. When driving short trips or slow city driving the DPF cannot do passive regens and active ones are more frequent to deal with this kind of driving.

It seems you've experienced similar regen interval across multiple different platforms which would seem to indicate they are fairly normal.

So it sounds like based on your experience I'm more worried over nothing because GM has set an improper perception?

Your experience is much appreciated, thank you for sharing

I have the truck back - loaner this time was a new Silverado Z71 - and the diagnosis must have been correct. No CEL. Here is the language from the service report:
Cause: Particulate Mass Sensor Shorted
Correction: Went through charts for P24B0 found mass sensor faulty/ replaced particulate sensor
Part number: 55590140

If I notice any different truck characteristics - Fuel Mileage difference, Regen noticability, performance, noise, etc. - I'll post.

Actually as I read through this sensor diagnostics there is no actual test for the sensor performance so I'm prolly not going to mess with it. The manual only states that if a DTC came up for the sensor to check the system to ensure it's getting the proper inputs and if the inputs are good then change the sensor. No actual test for the sensor output of the sensor to ensure it's in spec. :(

If there is a culprit contributing to the shorted regen intervals it's likely the Differential Pressure Sensor in the DPF which may be worth looking into

There is a bit on OBD Fusion to monitor the DEP Bank 1 delta pressure in SAE PIDs group. But the readings in inHG go all over the places, I can't pinpoint the triggering point. To test the delta-p requires some sensitive instrumentation set-up. It would be great if you find a way to check it. I am like you, concern about premature wearing of the DPF. Thanks.

I have been waiting for a replacement sensor for 2.5 weeks... GM has realized that these sensors are poorly built and has gone to Delphi for a replacement, Delphi is still working on it... I would recommend waiting until the new part exists as well as a service bulliton on the matter before trying to get anything done. I will update when the new part is on the way.

Wish GM put an idiot light in the gauge cluster to indicate when regens are occurring. I have to rely on the Torque Pro app instead.

At 23,000 miles my check engine light came on, dealer says it the dpf sensor and connector. They ordered the parts, but there is no estimated date to get the parts. Am I okay to drive the truck like this, or will it cause damage elsewhere on the vehicle??

#35 ·
Im in the same boat.

I believe it's okay to assume yes

Dealer advised it's okay as long as I see a regen as usual. If I don't regen they will do a forced regen.

May be a while before we get the new sensors

I went back to the dealer today to pick up my truck, I figured they were going to let me have it back until they got the parts in. They refused to let it go, because they didn't want me to get stranded somewhere with it. They gave me a 2017 Malibu as a loaner, until they get parts to fix my truck. I'll update with how long it takes to get it fixed.

Well my Sensor just took a dump at 13k miles. Truck is at the dealer now and they ordered a sensor. Might be done by Friday. I was coming home from a long trip and the SES light came on. Hoping the new one is better. Not too worried I bought a 72 month 120k mile warranty for the truck. They need to check if the radio needs updating, After remote starting with OnStar the radio was dead till I remote started it again with my phone.

What does the radio have to do with the exhaust particulate sensor?

Don't think I read this here yet, but I called my dealer this morning to schedule an oil change, and thought since I have it in there maybe I will have them look to see if I can get the sensor replaced. The Part number: 55590140 is discontinued. He was unable to see pricing or availability of the new part number. He is going to call and get more information and call back, I will ask for the new part number then.
@hacklerjason, if you still have that extra sensor, I might be interested, my AFE exhaust was on back order until 3/24 but just recently changed to 4/14. The SES light is driving me nuts and it doesn't help to reset it as it comes back the next time I start the truck.

Lots of dealers have the old number in stock. List is $288 but I don't see why you couldn't get one of them to do $199 or under.

New Part # 55502921

No pricing yet, he mentioned list price for the old part number was $300. He said the GM claimed they are setting up a new supplier but they are not set up yet, was going to call him back in 24-48 hours. At that time he would call me back.
