I have the lame Z85 black lamps. They all had moisture in them and Im replacing them anyway but I figured I would try. it.. heres how it went

Removal of grille and lamps (bumper is off cause Im building a custom one and the headlight needed to be repaired)
Image

HMMMM Nice
Image

First traced out where I wanted to black out with a sharpie
Image

oven on (lowest temp it would go to) Bake em for 20 minutes
Image

Pull em out and pull em open
Image

Reflector out
Image

Back taped for the painting
Image

Lightly dust with gloss black paint (dont scuff or prime..duh)
Image

Once paint is dry, test fit.
Image

Apply clear silicone into groove
Image

Assemble, bake for another 20 minutes (I used Kwik-e-klamps to hold lens while it dried)

And they are done!
Image

Image

Headlights are next
Image

I could have gotten really crafty and had small red vinyls made from my local sign shop and applied them before paint for this effect..
Image

Enjoy! Hope this helps anyone thinkin of removing their reflectors or painting.

Thanks for all the feedback, im glad you guys like the lights

OneShiftAway, most people use the xtreme headlights that are chrome and they just remove the reflectors, i could have done something simular cause under mine where chome as well but i chose to paint the inside of the lenses. the ones with the clear reflectors are purchased that way with the entire light.

thats my stock hood i modifided a few years ago. i took the fiberglass hoodscoops off a 70's AMC Javelin i believe it was. i shaped em to fit my hood, roughed up the hood to bare metal and used 3M's auto panel bonding epoxy to mount the scoops then molded them in. it has alot of chips right now from me taking it off so much (i cut alot of the inner structure out for weight savings) and i use it like a lift-off hood. its deff due for a new coat of "primer"

once i re-prime it i may sell it.

i tried doing something like that but my idea just didnt work out... yours look freakin awesome... just make sure you leave some reflectors on cuz if not you might attract attention from some cops... at least thats what they told me... nice baking man!

Looks good. Can you post a pic of where you mounted your hood pins, I have some coming for my new hood and was wondering where to mount them.

looks good, did you use a high heat paint? If you scuff the inside of the lens, won't it still come out smooth and shiny if you use a high gloss paint? I figured that not sanding and using regular paint on plastic right next to a heat source would cause the paint to peel quite fast.

Thanks again for all the comments guys!!! I cant wait to do the headlights (probley thursday when im off from work)

i used hi-heat engine paint (even though you dont have to) it was in my oven at 145* and no peeling occured. i didnt sand it cause it would have been next to impossible to keep from scratching up the clear part, and you would still see the small scratches under the paint.

when i was working in a hot rod shop, we used to take off the top coat of paint on corvettes using a gasket scraper with a razor blade because the top coat can be stubborn and clogs sand paper, anyway..the paint that would come off in strips and if you look at the underside of the paint, it would be as dull as the primer that was often wet sanded with 600 grit. im "asuming" it would have looked like that.

also, the paint is not exposed to any elements and cant get scratched on the inside of the light. also, paint sticks to differnt materials differently. i think it sticks to plastic a little better that it would on say..smooth aluminum cylinder heads

then again, this is my first time painting the inside of plastic lenses :rofl
