Has any one installed a custom shiftknob on their 5spd? And if so how did you remove the stock knob? Any info would be greatly appreciated, as plain as our interiors are this would be a quick, easy upgrade that would really enhance our interiors. Thanks

I agree, but be careful about buying cheapo ones at autozone, they fall off.

I am pretty sure the shifter is not a screw off affair as most other vehicles are. I think changing the shift knob is harder than it may initially seem.

i had to cut mine off with a hacksaw, then make the hole on the shiftknob bigger becuase the shaft is so big.

yeah, cutting is necessary, i called GM and they said that it does not come off, its complety connected to the shifter bar. And im kinda scared to cut anything, so ill just wait till a company comes out with a whole different shift bar for us. Kinda like the new focus, they have the same prob as we do, there shift knobs dont come off either, but a company made a whole new bar for them.

Well, I did it, and yes you do have to use a hacksaw. Starting at the top of the shiftknob I sawed down till I hit metal, at this time I used a chizel to split the rest of the knob of the shaft. You will have to either turn the shift shaft down to a smaller diameter or drill out the shiftknob. I chose to turndown the shaft and it was a pain in the a$$, however the end result was well worth the hassle. If I ever figure out how to post some pics I will. Good luck if you try this yourself.

Soooo.... How do you get the shift boot off the shaft without cutting it up so that you can remove the shifter completely when I make a new one? :P

I got mine off without cutting it. You just have to take and break the plastic around the bottom of the knob off with a pick of some sort, then it will come off. I would advise against making a new arm. The stock one has a rubber bushing running through the middle to take vibration out of it, so I would leave that be. Just my suggestion, take it how you will. I got my hurst knob today, and will be installing it tonight.
