I'm running my XM reciever thru a wired FM MOD. I get really bad static interference when the motor is running, not so much when the motor is off. It also gets worse at higher RPMs. So I'm assuming the more the alternator is turning over the more static I'm getting. The FM mod is wired to the back of the cig lighter (12v acc outlet), the same outlet that the XM reciever is pluged into.

Any ideas guys (or gals, if they're out there)?

do you have aftermartket speakers/sub? i have heard that if you run power wires and speaker wires next to each other you may get interference. if not, you may want to try a ground loop isolator.

Try moving the grounds to a better grounding location.

none...yet, I've heard that too, thanks

I thought about the ground too, when I flip th power to the FM MOD off then on, its better for a second or 2. Discharging maybe, I'll try moving the ground. Thanks Ratified, Shorty

Let us know if that works. If not, we'll try something else.

Should I just grab my drill and self tapping screw and go through the floor board?

Hmm! I think a better place is behind the dash. There is a nice beefy tube that goes across behind the radio area. If you do try the floor route, make sure you scrap away the paint and check for anything under the truck you might drill into before screwing!!!

I found that bar, and moved the ground to that location, but it didn't help. I noticed that when I use my IPOD through the FM mod there is no static, that narrows it down to the XM reciever or the 12 volt outlet. Any other ideas what I could try?

Could try hardwiring it to somewhere besides the cig lighter. The grounds in cig lighters are not the best. Could even be a bad receiver. Try hardwire first after you source a new cord. If that doesnt work, might be a bad receiver.

Another idea--have you tried different channels on the fm mod/radio?

Heres what I've tried lately:
tried different channels, no change.
ground loop isolator, made it worse.

Looks like I'm rewiring the FM mod on my saturday off...
Do you think that if I bouhgt one of the aux harness that plug into the back of the deck and ran my XM via the headphone jack input that the whine would go away?

It has to be a ground issue, I agree with Ratified that the cig. lighter is not the best ground. Maybe when you spliced into it in order to install your fm mod you made the ground that much worse. Maybe give the cig. lighter a better ground if you don't want to hard wire the xm radio. Using an aux hardness to the stereo should make it go away and it would even sound better that way instead of using a FM mod. Fred
