Well I did it just like you wrote it up and it worked like a charm bud! runs smoother and no more rpm bouncing low at stops. And the engine sure does hate that seafoam
1 It wanted to bog out when adding it and I even poured it very slowly in small amounts. I didnt get all the white smoke and stuff though

Great write up!!! I passed on the Seafoam for now, but I did go ahead and clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner while I was under the hood. I only have 26K miles, but my TB was pretty dirty. Afterword, when I was driving, I came to a stoplight and was amazed at how smooth my truck was idling.

Thanks again.

I want to thank you CpnBnanaMn for this write-up. I have never ever done anything with any car/truck that I have had beyond changing the oil. I have just never been inclined to mess with my vehicles. Give me something to do with computers, and I'll take them apart in a heart beat.

However, I have a 'rough idle' for about three months and it has been quite irritating. I am very good at noticing 'changes' to the vehicle that I drive, but I have always had to take the vehicle to my local auto shop or to the dealership. I wasn't too confident in the dealership after they told me that they could find nothing wrong, but would love to charge me a few hundred dollars to tinker with a couple of ideas. I declined and decided to search the internet. I found this website, and found a world of information.

With your write-up, I felt confident enough to go ahead a start unscrewing things and pulling other things apart. I cleaned up the throttle body (I did break the grey clip retainer for the electrical plug on the TB and will need to find a new one), put everything back, and started my truck up. Purring. Almost like new.

Thank you again. I will definitely frequent this site more often to figure out other possible things that I can do on my own. I now have a little more confidence that I can actually do something.

EDIT NOTE: I did not do the Sea Foam part. Not sure yet if I am ready to do that.

^^^^^^Don't lose sleep over breaking the little gray retainer clip. It's nothing more than a double safety. You have to remove it to depress the harness connector tab. But the harness will still slide back on and stay in place.

Following directions or not, I'm scared to death of doing the Seafoam thing.

I do run fuel injector cleaner through my fuel system occasionally. I figure that should help a bit.

I cleaned my throttle body (before reading this thread), and I can vouch that it made a huge difference with my idle. Mine was a bit sticky at 58k.

I just pull the throttle body off, clean it with throttle body cleaner from your local auto parts store, re-mount and spray a can of AMSoil Power Foam Engine Cleaner & Degreaser in the throttle body while the engine is running. After the can is empty, turn off the engine, let it set for 10 minutes and re-assemble the intake. I also run a bottle of AMSoil Fuel Additive and Performance Improver fuel system cleaner thru the tank every 4000 miles or so.

Then you could try the Amsoil Power Foam or the Seafoam Deep Creep.

jackedupcanyon - what's the procedure for spraying the foam into the TB. Are you removing the intake tube to do this or are you using the port on the TB where the vent line attaches.
Just curious.

I take off the intake. Then I hit the MAF with a little MAF cleaner and set it aside to dry. Then I actually remove the TB and clean it also. After the TB is clean, then I re-mount the TB but leave the MAF disconnected and the intake tube off. I shake the can of power foam, start the vehicle and spray the entire can in the TB while the engine is running. Turn off the engine and let it sit 10 minutes while I re-assemble the intake. After 10 minutes, I take it for a ride around the neighborhood till the smoke dies down some then I take it on the road to blow all the crap out. Then I come back and change the oil (once a year).

Thanks! Do you get a CEL from idling the engine with the MAF unhooked and the intake tube off?

So i had been getting the Dredded "reduced Power" mode occasionally for a while now and i read all of the inputs here related to it and decided to actually try this TB clean AND the seafoam treatment. Works like a charm! i gotta admit when i first started the flow of Seafoam into my intake it was a little scary to hear the way the truck ran from it LOL. but it cleaned out so much crap in my engine its running like new again. the only thing ill do next is the MAF sensor cleaner but i doubt it needs it since its running so well now. and so far so good on any CEL's and RP Mode. thanks for the write up its by far the best thing i could have done to my truck with 65k miles on it

Yes you should eventually get a CEL if you disconnect it. It just thinks it has failed. Probably will not get it right away because the computer looks for it to fail twice before it throws a code. Guess it depends on how often the PCM tests for failure. If you do not disconnect it and take the intake off then the truck should not stay running.

It has been awhile since I have done this to my truck. I have cleaned the TB on SEVERAL other vehicles with the same process. My truck will be getting another TB cleaning very soon. Will let you know.

I just ordered my years supply of Amsoil products. I'm going to see if I can inject the power foam through the evap vent port on the TB.

Thinking about it again, I believe the MAF is only tested once per trip (I think). As long as you do not choke the engine spraying too much foam in (hard to do) you should be fine.
