0W-30 Oil?

What exactly is the difference with 0W-30 and 5W-30?

Is 0W-30 good for our trucks or no?

What are the benefits to it? Any problems with it?

Just wondering. I change my own oil so I've been looking at other oils and debating options on things...

Thanks.

Its this viscosity of the oil. The 5w stands for the cold "thickness" of the oil....I would run only 5w thirty in our trucks...if you want to upgrade get a full synthetic mobile 1 5w-30 oil

EDIT: the first number in a multi viscosity oil always stands for the cold "weight" or "thickness" of the oil :D

Won't hurt to run 0w30 oil. Better for starting in cold weather. If you don't get that cold of weather, you might just want to stick with 5w30. You would notice a difference with the 0w30 for easier starting in cold temps.

An 0W30 and a 5W30 differ in viscosity (ease of flow) only when starting cold. Both oils are rated 30 at 100C, although the API ratings of viscosity at any weight have a range rather than a single number. In warmer climates it makes virtually no difference but in colder ones it's easier on the engine. At -40C I would be tempted to run 0W20. Others have tried this and I have heard of no indications of problems.

What about 5W-20????

I'm not trying to sound rude here, but why not just run what is recommended? You live in PA, the 5w-30 is more then fine for this climate. Enlighten all of us, what are you trying to accomplish?

I dont wanna accomplish anything.. In fact I'm pretty depressed lately. Especially since I wasted so much money on my truck.. I.E. $500 for HPTuners in which I can barely use cause I suck at life...

Sorry bad night..

Sorry for asking a question...

Wow bro sounds like you need to hit up the suicide hotline :?

Hope your ok...

Actually the're making us put 0w-30 in all the Atlima Hybrids at work. Thats what nissan recommends for that engine, its suppose to be a super energy conserving oil sinces its dam near water and flows really good. It just pours right out of the bottle. But this is for fuel economy so im guessin the lighterweight oil also kinda helps in economy.

I know using synthetic oil put the Corvette into better MPG range, thats what i've read.

Its cool man. I was just wondering. No need to apologize for asking. Its better to ask, then not at all. I've been pretty down too. I got a girl at work pregnant. I don't like her in any way other then the sex. It was just a boobty call. Shes not my type at all. I'm only 24 and I AM NOT ready for this. She decided to keep it, so im freakin the hell out. I can't even fit a babyseat in my fuggin truck.... I took a ride on the bike last night and came up with this...its too late to kick yourself over anything that has already happened. I am not sure of your ordeal but it ALWAYS gets better. Stay strong man and good things will happen!

Actually thats true, My old VW required 0w-40 and it was excellent for colder weather and I was able to get much better mpg (18) than with a 5w-30 or 10w=30. Granted it wasn't much and 18mpg still sucked, but it was better then it could have been.

You need a better excuse than that... A baby seat fits just fine in the extended cab! ;) You are going to have a blast!!

If you can make it to NJ on the 20th, I can go over the tuner with you. First hand experience FTW...

BTW, got pics of the MILF, she hot?
Yeah, it def sucks. Too late to sweat it now though. HAHA, I love my truck!! I see a V8 Crew in my future...we'll see. This all just HIT ME out of no where and its hard. HAHAHA, she is hot, but no pics. Like I said, we never really hung out...just...you know.

Yeah, I guess that excuse sucks, but its a concern. I just starting modding my truck after 3 years and was all into it, now I might have to hold back...Who knows.

Where do you get such a wide viscousity range oil? Usually I have to go past tons of 10W-30 stuff to get at the 5W-30 oil in parts stores here. Definately use the lower first number in winter because extreme cold is not the time to have "won't turn over" starting problems.

By the way, my Colorado has been very reliable in all weather starting including below zero Farenheit temperatures. To be inside a running truck rather than outside trying to get it to run is a real luxury.

...sorry to thread jack, but if my winters here in Canada are constantly -40*C... (-40*F) would it make sense to run the 0w-30?
Run what the owners manual says. But having 0w in your engine when you try to start it at -40F could make cranking it a bit easier on the battery. It's hard for me to imagine that extreme cold. I would assume that you are also running an engine block heater all the time. Even with 0w in the crankcase, it might not start without pre-heat.

I move between Oregon and Alaska on a oddly timed basis. I usually just throw fully syn 0w40 in. 40k miles of using it and I still don't burn any oil, I it cranks over at -30f without much effort even if I forgot to plug the block heater in and is quite happy in 80f degree weather too. My father's Colly burned more oil (5w30 every time, every 3k miles) at 20k than I do after 40k with 0w40 (3k-6k). So in my experience, it doesn't really matter. Just hopefully you use high quality oil.

Lesson learned here........condoms are cheaper than diapers.

:clueless 0W40 is thicker than 5/10W30.

^^^ Thinner cold (0w is thinner than 5 or 10), thicker hot (40 is thicker than 30).

Before I put 0-30w in the Truck I would find out if it voids the warranty. I know on my last car that was the case, but I'm not sure with the Colorado.
